I have worked as a C-Suite Executive within large multi-national corporates (including African countries) and have worked with small one man operations & start-ups. I have been a mentor for CIMA qualified members. as well as students and have aided qualified CA's come to grips with some of the real problems encountered in the day to day operations.

Over the last 35+ years, I have built up extensive experience in many aspects of running the finance function within a business.  This has been from hands-on experience of doing day to day tasks to carrying out analytical reports or even large feasibility studies on projects from less than R 1 million all the way up to > R 1 Bn investment. Most people (including you) can create standard financial reports in today's business environment. Software packages create many reports automatically. Presenting these reports in different formats does not make your company become successful unless you have an articulated plan on how to really achieve that.

A lot of entrepreneurs get help in creating a budget or plan for investors, which is nothing more than a hockey stick extrapolation of last year's financial results. There is little insight into looking forward.  Then they get rejected by the investor and they wonder why this happened?  They have not idenitifed the risks within the plan and the actions they need to take to mitigate those risks.

The skill normally lacking and that is more difficult to come by is how to interpret your results effectively and how to plan to improve your results, while you create value and unlock wealth within the business going forward. 

Recent press reports have highlighted how some major listed companies even reported profits over a number of years, only to make an adjustment later, because they had destroyed value during this time period. This happened even though one of the big 5 audited the results despite their positive financial reports having been shared with third parties.
